چکیده
The introduction of alien predatory fish such as rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) can have a significant effect on indigenous communities altering the structure and dynamics food webs. Quantifying trophic niche utilised by species is therefore important to aid our understanding how their feeding strategies might establishment, define functional role inform potential impacts. This study assessed web interactions between in river reaches that are invaded O. sections free invasions upper Blyde River catchment, South Africa. It specifically evaluated hypothesis invasion likely lead decrease diversity through predation will shift either minimise competition with, or avoid predation, mykiss. Gut content stable isotope analyses were used determine interactions. Fish uninvaded areas fewer similar sources occupied lower levels, than areas. fed mainly invertebrates at levels fishes. suggests current impact for resources. We posit reduced abundance fishes thereby pressure aquatic invertebrates, with knock-on interrelationships among assemblages. Our findings consistent other studies Africa shown impacts decline fragmentation populations shifts.

Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss
Rainbow trout are classified as Oncorhynchus mykiss, and as such belong to the same genus as Pacific salmon, and to the family Salmonidae, which includes Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), various trout (Salvelinus sp.), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) and whitefish (Coregonus sp.). Rainbow trout are native to areas around the North Pacific Ocean, from souther...
متن کاملGyrodactylid ectoparasites in a population of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
A colony of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a decentralized aquatic animal facility was noted to have an increase in morbidity and mortality (from 4 or 5 fish each month to 3 or 4 fish daily) approximately 2 wk after experimental procedures began. The primary clinical signs were erratic swimming behavior and 'flashing' of fish against surfaces within housing enclosures. Moribund and norm...
متن کاملMetabolism in Erythrocytes of the Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss
Experiments were carried out to investigate the relationship between ion exchange and energy metabolism in rainbow trout erythrocytes in vitro. Under resting conditions, the sodium/potassium pump accounts for 20 % of the cellular energy budget. In the presence of the /S-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol, however, this increases to 43 %. Inhibition of the sodium/potassium pump with ouabain result...
متن کاملVitellogenin receptors during vitellogenesis in the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss.
Rainbow trout vitellogenin receptors have been characterized by ligand blotting and Scatchard analysis. Their evolution has been studied over a reproductive cycle in a broodstock of 2-year-old females. The receptors were prepared from ovarian membrane homogenates and were solubilized using n-octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. The visualization of the receptor by ligand blotting using 125iodine-vitel...
متن کاملMediation of humoral catecholamine secretion by the renin-angiotensin system in hypotensive rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
The individual contributions of, and potential interactions between, the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the humoral adrenergic stress response to blood pressure regulation were examined in rainbow trout. Intravenous injection of the smooth muscle relaxant, papaverine (10 mg/kg), elicited a transient decrease in dorsal aortic blood pressure (PDA) and systemic vascular resistance (RS), and si...
